Watch it again: Green digitalisation and sustainable ICT products in Africa

Watch our two webinars, which tackle green digitalisation in the African region, with a focus on Kenya. African and European stakeholders attended to discuss global policy and standards, with a shared goal of resilient, green, and digital economies.

ICT products – including computers, phones, and tablets – can have damaging environmental impacts. As global demand for these products soars, managing e-waste and the end-of-life challenges has become urgent.

Effective and environmentally ambitious policies and standards can help to address the negative impacts of ICT products. However, global collaboration and exchange are key, because different regions approach the challenges in different ways – and both technical and local knowledge must play a role.

In a two-part webinar series covering (1) the environmental impacts of ICT products and (2) how to boost the uptake of sustainable ICT products, ECOS provided a platform for such an exchange.

Webinar 1: Exploring the environmental impacts of ICT products

Speakers Mathieu Rama of ECOS and Mathew Lubari of CC4D share information about the environmental impacts of ICT products. They also introduce examples of ecodesign and e-waste management standards and policies, exploring best practices and insights from Europe and Africa – including the repair community built by CC4D in South Sudan and Uganda.

Webinar 2: Boosting the uptake of sustainable ICT products

The second webinar focuses on the potential of solutions like digital product passports and sustainable procurement for boosting the uptake of sustainable ICT products, including in a Kenyan context. Speakers Mathieu Rama of ECOS and Leandro Navarro and Sergio Giménez of eReuse highlight that there are many opportunities for African policy and standardisation to tackle environmental issues arising from ICT.
