Why green public procurement?
The EU’s 2025 Clean Industrial Deal identifies public procurement as a crucial tool to support competitiveness and decarbonisation of key industrial sectors, including construction.
It must now become a reality. Procuring greener materials for infrastructural projects, schools, hospitals – such as concrete and steel – could own its own cut a quarter of the EU’s public construction-related emissions at little to no added cost. With 31% of the construction sector’s activities tied to public projects, contracting authorities have a key role to play in unlocking green public procurement’s full potential.
