ECOS joins new Cool Heating Coalition

Decarbonising how we heat and cool our homes is a central part of the transition to a low-carbon built environment. Responsible for a staggering 80% of the energy consumed by EU households, less than one-quarter of that comes from renewables. Most heating and cooling is still powered by fossil fuels – but that must change. ECOS has joined forces with a new partner to help make it happen: the Cool Heating Coalition.

Ensuring consumers can switch to renewable, sustainable, and affordable heating and cooling solutions is vital. Our heating and cooling needs must be met in a way that advances climate action and energy security while being affordable and clean. The technology to realise this transition is already there, but we also need the right policy framework to support it.

That’s why ECOS has joined forces with other NGOs, think tanks, and civil society organisations to form the Cool Heating Coalition, working together to make sustainable, renewable, and affordable heating and cooling a reality across the EU. Marco Grippa, ECOS Programme Manager for Heating Decarbonisation, is a member of the coalition’s steering committee.

The Cool Heating Coalition formally launched in Brussels on 19 March, where it presented its statement for the next EU mandate: an eight-point plan on securing sustainable, renewable, and affordable heating and cooling by 2040.

Fahrenheit 2040: heating and cooling in the EU – a webinar

The Cool Heating Coalition will host its first webinar, Fahrenheit 2040: heating and cooling in the EU, on 28 May from 11-12h30. Speakers will address how to decarbonise heating and cooling in the EU by 2040.

The webinar will gather together the Cool Heating Coalition membership, policymakers, aligned organisations, industry representatives, and the media to consider the outlook and policy options, based on the Öko-Institut’s assessment of the current EU policy framework.

Register here for the webinar – and get ready for the #CoolHeatingRevolution!
