Formal vote underway for updated draft standard on reparability of ecodesign products

The much-awaited standard prEN45554 for the assessment of reparability, reusability and upgradeability (RRU) of ecodesign products is currently undergoing a formal vote at the standardisation bodies CEN and CENELEC until 25 October 2019.

The draft standard is part of a set of horizontal standards related to material efficiency of ecodesign products under European Commission’s Standardisation Request M/543. Containing key criteria for the assessment of RRU and a scoring system, the method described in the standard constitutes an important step towards expanding and systematising the consideration of these aspects in ecodesign product-specific regulations, while also providing a blueprint for future product-specific standards.

An earlier version of the standard underwent a public enquiry last January, but a positive vote by the majority was not sufficient to achieve the 71% approval threshold required. The new version now features amendments on the text to improve the readability and understanding of the methodology outlined, and also a better harmonisation with other relevant standards under the M/543 project.

Considering the method’s importance and the high potential to contribute to reaching expected material efficiency goals, ECOS has been advocating for the approval and publication of the long-overdue method as soon as possible.

We, therefore, once again urge the National Standardisation Bodies to cast a positive vote.
