Factsheet – Making electrification work
What can the EU do to make electrification work? From renewables to efficiency – and everything in-between – discover the six energy transition essentials in our factsheet.
The EU has to move away from fossil fuels for its security, resilience, and sustainability. Electrification is a vital tool to make this happen. However, over half the electricity mix in the EU still comes from non-renewable sources, so while electrification is essential, it is not the end of the story.
Electricity must come from renewable sources. The EU also needs to use less of it – that’s where energy efficiency comes in. Speeding up the energy transition via electrification could save Europe €250 billion per year, as well as making homes healthier, bills cheaper, and the bloc more independent.
But there are obstacles to the energy transition – and this has to change.
We have mapped out how European policymakers can make electrification work better and happen faster.
Essentials for a successful energy transition
- Ensuring energy for electricity comes from renewable sources
- Prioritising energy savings through energy efficiency
- Ensuring the technical feasibility of demand-side flexibility
- Supporting and upscaling clean technologies
- Rebalancing the gas-electricity price ratio to make electricity cheaper
- Prioritising decarbonising industry and high-emitting sectors, while mitigating the impacts of the most electricity hungry (including data centres)
