Webinar – Circular Economy: Using standards to support the EU Strategy on Plastics

plastics webinarEarlier this year the European Commission released its roadmap strategy on plastics in a circular economy. The Commission’s strategy on plastics will be published in December this year, following a public consultation for stakeholders. For ECOS, this is a unique opportunity to provide input and discuss how standards should or should not be used to support upcoming EU policy objectives.

Today, standards help determine what end-of-life options there are for plastics and packaging, including alternatives to conventional plastics such as bioplastics.

Standards for plastics and plastics packaging currently primarily refer to their biodegradability and compostability in different conditions and in different environments. They also provide requirements on how end-of-life options for plastics/plastics packaging should be communicated to consumers and businesses.

But how can these standards help reach EU policy objectives? Should new standards be developed or can existing standards be improved?

ECOS Policy Officer Marjolaine Blondeau and ECOS Expert Nike Mortier (Lab researcher in end-of-life plastics & plastics packaging) will:

  • Guide you through the current policy framework on plastics and packaging and its relation to standards
  • Review the most relevant standards that help determine the end-of-life options for plastics and plastics packaging
  • Share ideas and recommendations on how standardisation can feed into EU policies on plastics
