Step into the future – sustainability is the norm for our everyday products!

The European Union stands before a unique opportunity to make our everyday products truly sustainable. In December 2021, the Commission is planning to announce the details of its Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI), a set of legislative files meant to boost circularity of the EU’s single market.

The Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI) will determine the requirements products must meet in order to be allowed in the EU’s. The SPI will draw on the success of the existing ecodesign and energy labelling policies, which are estimated to bring energy savings of approximately 230 Mtoe (million tonnes of oil equivalent) by 2030.  How? A combination of push and pull mechanisms provides incentives to drive the worst performers off the market while rewarding the most efficient products with high-class energy labels.

The SPI is supposed to go a step further. It is expected to extend minimum requirements to a whole new array of sectors (textiles, construction, textiles…), and make sure products are not only energy-efficient but also repairable, durable, recyclable and free of dangerous chemicals.

Whether the SPI will be a true game-changer or not will depend on the ambition showed by policymakers. What could our everyday lives look like if sustainable products became the norm? Find out below! Click on the image to see it in greater detail.
