Servers step up their energy performance

serverEurope got one step closer to seeing better energy performance from commercial servers and storage sold in Europe. Consultants working for the European Commission published a report recommending energy efficiency requirements and, in a second step, label schemes. This move will temper growing energy demand from the sector. As an ever-increasing high-tech society, the power consumption for this product group has risen, now standing at 2.5% of all electricity consumed in the EU28, according to the consultants. The measures they suggest could save up to 17 TWh/year by 2030 – equivalent to the entire residential consumption of Austria or the production of 23 medium size coal power plants.
