Revision of Lighting Regulations

street lightIn December 2015, the Commission presented a proposal to revise the Ecodesign and Energy Label lighting regulations with the intention of merging several lighting regulations into one. With only one regulation to follow, industry and market surveillance authorities can easily adhere to it, and although we support the intention, there was a clear lack of ambition of the draft proposal on Ecodesign. The requirements proposed are less ambitious than the requirements for professional lighting adopted in 2009. So far, the most evident reason to why the energy label for lamps has been unsuccessful has been put down to its’ size, and more importantly, its’ positioning on the back of the packaging (i.e. not directly visible by consumers in shops). A revision should solve this visibility issue. The ECOS-EEB led Coolproducts campaign initially shed light on this issue, and it was reported on by media across Europe.
