ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

29 April 2026

Meet our new Member from Romania!

ECOTECA is the latest Romanian member of ECOS. We are eager to work with them on waste management and circular economy policies!

We got in contact with Alexandra Ghenea, Vice President of ECOTECA, to discover a little bit about ECOTECA. Read to find out more about them!

Could you briefly introduce yourself to the network? What is the mission of ECOTECA and what are your main activities?

My name is Alexandra Ghenea, representing ECOTECA, a Romanian technical NGO active in circular economy and waste management policy.

ECOTECA works at the intersection of EU policy and national implementation. We provide technical input to Romanian legislation on waste prevention, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), WEEE, packaging, and broader circular economy frameworks. Our activity combines legislative analysis, stakeholder dialogue, data assessment, and capacity building for public authorities and educational institutions.

At EU level, we actively follow and contribute to discussions related to eco-design, repairability, EPR performance, traceability, and sustainability requirements under the Green Deal framework. Our role is to translate European objectives into practical, enforceable mechanisms at national level.

What is your main interest in joining the ECOS network?

Our main interest in joining ECOS – Environmental Coalition on Standards stems from a structural challenge in Romania: while legislation is largely aligned with EU directives, enforcement and performance monitoring remain weak.

We strongly believe that well-designed and properly implemented standards are essential to ensure:

  • transparent and harmonised data reporting,
  • credible traceability systems,
  • measurable environmental performance,
  • effective waste prevention and high-quality treatment.

For countries where enforcement gaps persist, standards are not secondary technical tools — they are fundamental governance instruments.

Through ECOS, we aim to contribute practical insights from implementation realities in Romania while supporting the development of robust European standards that strengthen transparency, accountability, and circular economy performance across Member States.

It is of course a pleasure for us at ECOS to have the opportunity to work together with ECOTECA!
