Meet our new member from Nigeria!

By JP Antonucci Rezende

Community Action Against Plastic Waste is a Nigerian organisation active across different regions of the Global South, working on plastic waste and policy solutions.

We asked Ahmed Tiamiyu, the Executive Director of Community Action Against Plastic Waste (CAPws), to tell us a little bit more about their organisation and their projects.

Could you briefly introduce CAPws?

Community Action Against Plastic Waste (CAPws) is a grassroots, nonprofit organisation advancing inclusive, toxic-free circular economy solutions to tackle plastic pollution at the intersection of human rights, public health, climate action and environmental justice. Headquartered in Nigeria and active across Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, CAPws works alongside frontline and historically marginalised communities disproportionately impacted by plastic pollution and waste colonialism to advance a just transition away from extractive, waste-intensive systems toward safe, community-centered reuse and refill economies.

What are your main activities?

Our work is rights-based, evidence-driven and grounded in community knowledge, combining policy engagement, research, citizen science, advocacy and innovation to strengthen environmental governance and advance systemic solutions across the full plastics lifecycle. CAPws provides technical support on plastic policy and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems, contributes to global plastics treaty negotiations, and generates community-informed evidence on the health, environmental and socio-economic impacts of plastic pollution. We also support environmental education, youth and women leadership, and locally driven reuse enterprises that create dignified green livelihoods for informal waste pickers, persons with disabilities and other underserved groups.

What is your main interest in joining the ECOS network?

We are interested in joining the ECOS network because of our shared commitment to ambitious environmental standards, independent civil society advocacy, human rights-based approaches and science-driven policymaking. We look forward to contributing Global South perspectives, grassroots expertise and evidence-based circular economy solutions while strengthening collaboration on toxic-free production systems, environmental health, climate resilience, corporate accountability and plastic pollution prevention.

ECOS is very much looking forward to working together with CAPws and expand our own knowledge on plastic waste through a diversified perspective.
