Joint Letter: European Standards in German Legislation for the treatment of WEEE

ECOS has co-authored  a letter with German non-governmental organisations Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), Koordinierungsbüro Normungsarbeit der Umweltverbände (KNU) and ECOS member Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND).

The letter calls upon German standardisers and regulators to include the European standard series EN 50625 in key German legislation on waste and air quality. This standard series sets minimum requirements for the treatment of Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

If this series of standards is not considered, a conflict between German legislation and European Standardisation efforts will arise. This will hamper German law from adopting progressive standards in their legislations, and ultimately have a negative impact on the environment.

The official, German letter is available to read here, and an unofficial, translated letter in English here
