ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

Call for experts – Textiles

ECOS is looking for experts in the field of textiles to represent and defend environmental interests in the development of standards and related policies. Our experts provide us with technical and scientific input and represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

Application deadline: 16/11/2026

The textile sector is deeply short-term driven, linear, and heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Textile production causes air, water, and soil pollution and is a significant driver of climate change, biodiversity loss, and damage to ecosystems and human health. Negative environmental impacts fall disproportionally on the vulnerable stakeholders outside of the EU. Furthermore, the global consumption of clothing has changed significantly since the early 2000s and is increasing due to a trend of ‘buy-use-throw away’. This exacerbates the pressure of the sector on the people and planet.

Our vision is to bring the textile sector back within planetary boundaries. Circular economy strategies and ecodesign policies play a critical role in reducing the pressure on the environment. Standards will be instrumental in implementing them.

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge of sustainability and circular economy strategies of textiles and their value chain. Expertise in ecodesign aspects, durability/robustness testing, substances of concern, product environmental footprinting, with particular attention to carbon footprint and accounting, will be an asset (experts may not necessarily be versed in all the listed aspects, and could be hired to advice on specific themes only).

The nominated experts may:

  • Participate in technical meetings of CEN (and possibly ISO) meetings to promote ECOS position.
  • Prepare technical input through official comments and/or contribution to ECOS position papers.
  • Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS Programme Manager.
  • Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.
