20 years of ECOS – Watch our online conference on ‘Making Sustainable Products the Norm’
This conference marked our 20th anniversary and was an occasion to debate the European Commission’s highly anticipated Sustainable Products Initiative looking into how we can make sustainable products the norm in the EU and beyond.
In celebration of 20 years of advocating for environmentally friendly technical standards and policies, our conference explored how the Sustainable Products Initiative can transform the way products are designed.
The conference opened with a keynote speech by Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries.
During the panel, we explored how we can change how products are designed, and the key role the EU has to play as a global leader in promoting sustainable production and consumption, a fundamental element in the fight against climate change and promoting a circular economy.
Our event also provided an international perspective to the EU’s plans to expand ecodesign to more products, and how this can be a race to the top to make sustainable products the norm globally. In addition, we examined the role standards can play in supporting ambitious policy and legislation in response to global environmental challenges.
Moderated by Katrina Sichel, the discussion provided first-hand insights from:
- Isabelle Durant, Acting Secretary-General, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
- Nancy Gillis, Chief Executive Officer, Global Electronics Council
- Karin Kreider, Executive Director, ISEAL
- Matjaž Malgaj, Head of Unit, DG Environment, European Commission
- Justin Wilkes, Executive Director, ECOS
