In a letter sent today, ECOS, EEB and Zero Waste Europe urge the Council of the European Union to appoint the Environment Council as the minister configuration leading on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
At a recent meeting with international standardisers ISO and IEC, ECOS stressed the importance of robust standards to realise the international climate goals. We welcomed the commitments for more environmentally friendly standards made by international organisations last year.

Last month, the European Commission released a proposal for a reviewed EU Regulation on Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases (the F-Gas Regulation), which currently represent 2.5% of the EU's climate impact. On 2 February, the European Commission adopted the EU Strategy on Standardisation, comprising a number of documents that outline the EU approach to standards within the bloc’s internal market as well as globally. The tide is slowly changing: the European Union is seeking advice from citizens on how to confront this problem. As part of the Rethink Plastic alliance, ECOS has called on policymakers to tackle microplastics at the source – before they are even created.

On 30 March, the European Commission published its much-awaited Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2022-2024, which sets out the priorities for the implementation of this EU policy. The plan includes bright prospects for new rules that will drive further energy savings, and stresses the need to make up for the delays in the development of regulations for several products.
