White paper – Sustainable resource management in the EU
There is a crucial gap in current EU law. Resource overconsumption is not being addressed and is predicted to continue to rise, underscoring the need for a new, binding EU Directive on Sustainable Resource Management, with science based and overarching reduction targets for resource use.
This directive will commit the EU and its Member States to develop sufficiency strategies, with an emphasis on reducing resource use in high-consumption sectors like transport, construction, and digital industries. The directive will mandate sector-specific roadmaps with binding sub-targets and it will also ensure a just transition in line with ILO guidelines and respecting workers’ rights.
In a collective voice, NGOs have joined together to support an EU Directive on Sustainable Resource Management. This report was written in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Europe, the European Youth Forum, the European Environmental Bureau, the Climate Action Network Europe, the Environmental Coalition on Standards, Zero Waste Europe, the négaWatt Association, Seas at Risk, and RREUSE.
