ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

26 November 2021

Watch our workshop on civil society in standardisation & the case of reuse!

The effective participation of environmental NGOs in standards-making is key to making sure our planet is protected by robust rules. We co-organised a workshop with our member GLOBAL 2000 to look into how to make this engagement possible in Austria and took a deep-dive into the field of reuse & refill.

Our online workshop brought together participants from public institutions, NGOs, industry and the standardisation sector from Austria and several other national contexts. A diverse exchange of perspectives allowed them to learn more about civil society engagement in standardisation and to take a deep dive into how standards can boost reuse & refill!

Bringing together speakers from the European Commission, the Austrian Standards Body as well as the Austrian environmental ministry and industry, we discussed:

  • Why it is important for civil society to be involved in standardisation;
  • How engagement of eNGOs in standards-making can be facilitated;
  • How the interplay of standards and policy plays out in practice focusing on the example of reuse & refill systems
