10 years to save the oceans – ECOS co-signs the Blue Manifesto
Environmental NGOs launch a new rescue plan for Europe to make our ocean healthy by 2030. The Blue Manifesto proposes actions and sets deadlines needed to turn the tide on the ever-degraded and polluted ocean and coastlines.
ECOS is proud to join the 102 environmental organisations led by Seas at Risk, BirdLife Europe, ClientEarth, Oceana, Surfrider Foundation Europe and WWF, who believe that to be successful, change is needed on both land and sea.
The signatories of the Blue Manifesto call on the European Commission to make oceans an integral part of the climate and biodiversity strategies within the European Green Deal and take urgent actions towards protecting and restoring the world’s waters, in particular:
- Keep 30% of vulnerable marine and coastal areas pristine, restricted to human activities and continually monitored;
- Eradicate illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in EU waters and globally;
- Secure a pollution-free ocean;
- Stop human activities incompatible with our climate and favour a sustainable blue economy that respects and adapts to the ecosystem.
Heeding the recommendations presented in the Blue Manifesto will put Europe on the right track to protect and restore the ocean. 2030 is just ten years away and the coming decade will be decisive. With sufficient political commitment, the change can still be delivered.
