Open Letter: A new energy market design

Today, the European Commission launched its proposal for a new energy market design in Europe. ECOS, together with 13 actors from Europe’s energy sector ranging from green NGOs, cities, industry and consumer groups, have sent an open letter to Vice President Šefcovic and Commissioner Cañete to support their work in delivering demand side flexibility and “efficiency first” as part of the strategy and goals presented in the European Commission’s Energy Union Communication.

The 14 signatories call on the Commission to deliver on its promise to drive a fundamental transformation of the EU’s energy system and point to five priorities to reach this goal:

  • Improve energy efficiency;
  • Develop new business models;
  • Empower active consumers;
  • Address the security of supply;
  • Support renewable energy growth and self-generation.
