Fridges & freezers: don’t let EU rules perish
A+ is the worst label you’ll find on a fridge on the EU market today. Market data shows confused consumers buying the most inefficient models in worryingly high numbers, despite energy efficiency being the number one factor shoppers look for. The A-G scale has become completely redundant and needs to be reset as soon as a revision of the Energy Labelling Directive framework is complete.
The energy efficiency of fridges and freezers has improved tremendously, thanks to related EU Ecodesign legal requirements over the last twenty years, but these product groups are still responsible for more than 3% of the total electricity consumption of the EU. A recent study forming the basis for a legislative revision concluded that more can be done: 10 TWh extra savings per year could be saved by revising the rules. We know even more can be done by getting rid of correction factors.
