CEN-CENELEC about to take new step towards a non-toxic environment

ECOS has taken part in the preparation of a CEN-CENELEC report on “sustainable chemicals”, which is coming to an end with a vote of the CEN and CENELEC members expected to conclude by the end of the year.

Following a request from the European Commission in 2017, CEN and CENELEC carried out a mapping of existing standards in relation to chemicals from primary and secondary raw materials with a view to identify the existing gaps and needs. In particular, the role which standards could play towards the sustainability of chemicals was assessed, taking into account the different stages of the lifecycle of chemicals, from feedstock to production, products, use and recycling. The work was carried out in the context of the Commission Action Plan for the Circular Economy. If the outcome of voting is positive, the mapping will help inform future political and standardisation decisions to move towards a non-toxic environment in the EU and beyond.

ECOS calls for the CEN and CENELEC members to endorse and publish the report and its recommendations.
