Furniture circularity and sustainability
ECOS is looking for experts in the field of furniture to represent and defend environmental interests in the development of standards and related policies. Our experts provide us with technical and scientific input and may represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

The furniture sector has a significant environmental impact, primarily in material use, waste generation, and chemical use. In 2017, it was estimated that around 10 million tonnes of furniture were discarded in the EU, of which only approximately 10% were recycled, with the remainder going to landfill or incineration (EEB, 2017). Furthermore, the use of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and chemical substances such as flame retardants, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Phthalates, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), dyes and pesticides also leads to chemical pollution throughout the lifecycle and could obstruct recycling.
Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge of the furniture industry and its circular economy potential. Knowledge of substances of concern and the standardisation process at international or national level will be considered an asset.
Possible tasks include:
- Participate in technical meetings of CEN (and possibly ISO) meetings to promote ECOS position.
- Prepare technical input through official comments and contributions to ECOS position papers or responses to policy consultations.
- Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS Programme Officer.
- Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.
ECOS offers:
- A daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks.
- Reimbursement of travel costs.
- Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.
