The ECOS Annual Conference 2023 focused on how we should communicate environmental information to ensure reliability and transparency. It offered exciting insights on combating greenwashing while breaking down the do's and don'ts of green claims.
Green claims, including those promising 'climate neutral', ‘plastic neutral’ or 'nature positive' products and companies, have gained significant prominence in the recent years. However, the credibility of these claims raises doubts and poses the question: should we believe them?
Last week, the EU presented its new proposal for a Green Claims Directive. Sadly, without harmonised methodologies at the EU level, the new Directive will provide little clarity to consumers and business, and will only complicate the job of market surveillance authorities. It is now up to the European Parliament and the Council to improve the proposal so that it is of value to consumers, companies producing sustainable products, and the environment.
