Joint letter – Restrict hazardous substances in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

Ahead of the first trilogue for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), we are asking negotiators to address hazardous substances in packaging materials in the upcoming discussions and maintain the ambition of the EU’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.

In our joint letter with environmental NGOs and members of the Rethink Plastic Alliance, we ask the negotiators to:

  • Introduce restrictions in the cases of unacceptable risks to human health or the environment with wording aligned with the ESPR.
  • Introduce bans on PFAS and BPA in packaging.

European people and the environment are still widely exposed to chemical pollution and subsequent risks to health. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), offers an opportunity to limit this exposure, especially considering the ongoing delays of two other important files, REACH and the Food Contact Materials Regulation.
