CALL FOR EXPERTS – Environmental assessments for soil functions and ecosystem services

ECOS is looking for experts in the field of environmental assessments of soil functions and ecosystem services to represent and defend environmental interests in the development of standards and related policies. Our experts provide us with technical and scientific input and represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

The nominated experts will: 

  • Participate in relevant technical meetings of CEN and ISO to promote ECOS position;  

  • Prepare technical input through official comments and position papers; 

  • Report to and liaise with the relevant ECOS Programme Manager; 

  • Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed. 

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge on: 

  • The main characteristics of key Ecological Soil Functions (ESF) and how they relate to soil properties and to ecosystem services;   
  • How ESF can be evaluated in different contexts of land use and management (e.g. agricultural, forest, natural or semi-natural ecosystems) for environmental monitoring;  
  • Indicators used in the assessment and monitoring of soil properties, soil functions and ecosystem services;
  • Soil health & soil quality approaches and adverse effects on soil health (e.g. nutrient imbalance  in soil,  excessive fertilization, soil loss processes, loss of soil biodiversity).

In addition to the core topics of environmental measurements of soil, ecological functions and ecosystem services, knowledge of at least one of the following topics is desirable: biodiversity, soil carbon, soil sealing, soil pollution, soil fertility 

ECOS offers:

  • A daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks; 
  • Reimbursement of travel costs; 
  • Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.

Applications will be assessed by the secretariat on a rolling basis, applying ECOS procurement policy. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
