Call for Experts – Clean Cooking for Africa
ECOS is looking for experts in the field of Clean cooking to represent and defend environmental interests for the development of standards and related policies for our African office in Nairobi, Kenya. Our experts provide technical and scientific inputs and represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

Nearly 80% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa still rely on polluting fuels such as biomass for cooking, despite the availability of cleaner, safer, and more efficient alternatives like bioethanol, and electric cooking. We are committed to advancing clean cooking technologies through strong policy frameworks and ambitious technical standards that improve environmental sustainability, public health, and energy efficiency.
The nominated expert will represent ECOS in the standardisation work related to clean cooking technologies. This includes participation in technical committees focusing on performance measures of cooking appliances, covering key areas such as energy efficiency, emissions reduction. The expert will be actively involved in shaping standards that address the unique needs of African countries and align with global sustainability goals.
Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
- Clean cooking technologies (bioethanol, LPG, electric cooking, improved cookstoves)
- Energy efficiency and emissions standards for appliances
- Environmental and health impacts of cooking fuels
- Regional and international standardisation processes
Nice to have:
- Knowledge of African energy policy frameworks and environmental regulations
- Experience with international bodies such as ISO or regional organisations like the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO)
The nominated experts will:
- Participate in technical meetings (possibly of ISO or of technical working groups) to promote ECOS position;
- Prepare technical input through official comments and contributions to ECOS position papers and publications
- Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS Programme Manager and Programme Officer;
- Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.
ECOS offers:
- A competitive daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks;
- Reimbursement of travel costs;
- Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.
