ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

CALL FOR EXPERTS – Textiles

ECOS is looking for experts in the field of textiles to represent and defend environmental interests in the development of standards and related policies. Our experts provide us with technical and scientific input and represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

The textile sector is deeply short-term driven, linear, and heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Textile production causes air, water, and soil pollution and is a significant driver of climate change, biodiversity loss, and damage to ecosystems and human health. Negative environmental impacts fall disproportionally on the vulnerable stakeholders outside of the EU. Furthermore, the global consumption of clothing has changed significantly since the early 2000s and is increasing due to a trend of ‘buy-use-throw away’. This exacerbates the pressure of the sector on the people and planet.

Our vision is to bring the textile sector back within planetary boundaries. Circular economy strategies play a critical role in reducing the pressure on the environment. Policies and standards are currently in the making to ensure that textiles are more durable, repairable, non-toxic, and produced with zero pollution targets in mind.

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge of the sustainability as well as circular economy strategies of textiles and their value chain.

The nominated experts will:

  • Participate in technical meetings of CEN (and potentially ISO) to promote ECOS position.
  • Prepare technical input through official comments and contributions to ECOS position papers, particularly on textile design aspects and circularity, and product environmental footprint.
  • Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS Programme Manager.
  • Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.

ECOS offers:

  • A daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation, and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks.
  • Reimbursement of travel costs.
  • Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.

Please send your CV and cover letter outlining your motivation and demonstrating your suitability to support and represent ECOS to Luca Boniolo <luca.boniolo@ecostandard.org> by 28/02/2024 COB. Applications will be assessed by the secretariat on a rolling basis, applying ECOS procurement policy. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted
