ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

Bioeconomy and nature

We are seeking experts in bioeconomy and nature topics, such as forestry or agriculture - including food/feed, bioenergy, or biomaterials. Deadline 1 February 2026

The adoption of the Nature Restoration Regulation, initiatives within the EU bioeconomy policy framework, and the development of standards related to monitoring and assessment constitute the context for this call for experts.

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical/scientific knowledge in:

  • Ecological management practices, such as agroecology, ecological forestry, sustainable soil management.
  • Environmental assessment tools, such as ecosystem health assessments (including biodiversity, soil, water), greenhouse gas accounting, and lifecycle assessment of bio-based products.

Your skills should relate to at least one of the following fields: forest/forestry science or agriculture – this can include food/feed, bioenergy, or biomaterials, e.g. wood-based products, bio-based plastics, bio-based textiles.

Please note, applications will reviewed focussing on the depth and adequacy of relevant knowledge, rather than breadth. Single-topic experts are therefore encouraged to apply, as well as experts with demonstrable knowledge across multiple topics.

The geographical scope of the work includes Europe, Africa, and the international level.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental NGO values and have proven written and oral communication and negotiation skills. Experience with and understanding of the policy context and standardisation developments in the subject area will be considered a strong asset. Fluency in English and willingness to travel are required.

The nominated experts will:

  • Participate in CEN and/or ISO technical meetings, as well as EU Expert Group meetings to promote ECOS position.
  • Prepare technical input through official comments and contribution to ECOS position papers;
  • Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS staff.
  • Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.

ECOS offers:

  • A daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks.
  • Reimbursement of travel costs.
  • Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.
