Reusable packaging systems
ECOS is looking for experts in the field of reusable packaging systems to represent and defend environmental interests in the development of standards and related policies. Our experts provide us with technical and scientific input and represent ECOS in standardisation processes and multi-stakeholder discussions.

Deadline: 14 March 2025
New EU packaging rules
The EU adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in 2024. It will change previous EU rules on packaging, including reusable packaging and reuse systems. The regulation includes sustainability criteria for reusable packaging, obligations for actors putting reusable packaging on the market, requirements for reuse systems, as well as obligations to use a minimum share of reusable packaging for certain business sectors.
The harmonised standard on reusable packaging (EN 13428:2004) will be revised to continue to provide a presumption of conformity with EU rules. Further standardisation may be required to support the sector in meeting political objectives.
Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate in-depth technical and scientific knowledge on reusable packaging systems – including container pool management, return incentives, infrastructure and logistics, reconditioning, and washing. A focus should be on monitoring the environmental performance of reuse systems. Candidates should have a good understanding of at least one specific setting, e.g. reusable take away food and beverage packaging, reusable beverage bottles in retail, or transport packaging.
The nominated experts will:
- Participate in technical meetings of CEN (and possibly ISO) meetings to promote ECOS position.
- Prepare technical input through official comments and contribution to ECOS position papers.
- Report to and liaise with the responsible ECOS Programme Manager.
- Exchange information with ECOS member organisations and other experts when needed.
ECOS offers:
- A daily fee for preparation of meetings, participation and reporting, as well as other relevant tasks.
- Reimbursement of travel costs.
- Per diem to cover accommodation and subsistence costs.
Please send your CV and cover letter outlining your motivation and demonstrating your suitability to support and represent ECOS to Mathias Falkenberg <mathias.falkenberg[at]ecostandard.org> by 14 March 2025 COB.
Applications will be assessed by the secretariat on a rolling basis, applying ECOS procurement policy. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
