Technical Committees are rarely aware of the need to consider hazardous chemicals in product standards, often lacking the expertise needed in order to draft specific provisions. The CEN chemicals project aims to provide tailored support to standardisers by creating a CEN Guide for including such provisions in standards, ensuring that product standards in the market comply with chemicals legislation and contribute to minimising the health and environmental impacts of chemicals in products.
ECOS is a member of the CEN chemicals project team together with the standard bodies of Austria (ASI), Denmark (DS) and Spain (AENOR), under the lead of CEN. The CEN project was launched in January 2015 and is supported by the European Commission.
ECOS and the Austrian standard body (ASI) have been co-responsible for drafting recommendations for the content of the future Guide, following an extensive literature collection and review. The recommendations were discussed on 15 October at a meeting with the project’ Stakeholder Panel, comprised of representatives of the EC, national standard bodies, member states, research institutes, ECHA, public authorities, industry, and NGOs. Based on their input, ASI and ECOS will finalise the report and commence drafting the future CEN Guide in January 2016. The project will be completed in mid-2017.
